Wood Sage and Sea Salt launched in 2014, created by perfumer Christine Nagel for Jo Malone London. The brief was the English seaside: salt spray on the skin, driftwood drying on the shingle, sage growing wild on the clifftops above. Nagel skipped the obvious aquatic notes and built the scent around ambrette seed and mineral salt instead, which is why it smells like a windswept coastline rather than a swimming pool. It became one of the brand's biggest sellers, worn by men and women in roughly equal numbers, and it turned "smells like the beach but expensive" into its own fragrance category.

It also costs upwards of $250 for a 100ml bottle, and it's a cologne concentration, which means it fades within a few hours.
